Supports for Implementation of the QI Model

This is an invitation to physician and hospital leaders who are ready to demonstrate their commitment to quality and safety, but who who are not looking to be independent trail-blazers. The collaborative process promotes mutual support, shared learning and knowledge transfer. It also lowers the effort and cost of change.

Here's a general outline of the proposal. In contrast to the well-defined structure of the Normative Database Project, the Collaborative is in an earlier phase of design. The details will be greatly influenced by the preferences of the initial participants. QA to QI Consulting will provide subject matter expertise and will coordinate data collection, analysis and publication of results. Depending on participation of co-sponsors, we may be able to explore grant funding in support of the project.

Total costs for participation have not yet been determined.  They should be modest, but will depend on the final collaborative design, including the number of face-to-face meetings and the extent of in-kind resource contributions by participants. Participants will be eligible to license My PREPTM tools at a substantial discount. They will also have the option to join the collaborative through a Patient Safety Organization relationship.

Knowing What to Do is not the same as Knowing How

  • Our research to date has identified the key elements of the QI Model and provides compelling subjective and objective evidence of its superior impact on quality and safety.
  • Moving from QA-style peer review to the QI Model also makes good sense in terms of the factors that are important to the medical staff (e.g., non-punitive, non-threatening process)
  • Only limited numbers of organizations have made this specific journey. Thus, the critical success factors for transitioning from QA to QI are understood largely by inference from other change initiatives. They have not yet been established across large numbers of organizations.
  • Let's work together to pave the road from QA to QI for those who follow.

The Implementation Challenge

  • Implementation is the most vulnerable phase of most projects.
  • Changing culture is not easy.
  • Even good ideas need practical support to succeed.

Strength in Numbers

  • 30-50 programs working together
  • Sharing best practices
  • Sharing lessons learned

Publication of Results

  • Recognition for leadership
  • Contribution to collective knowledge
